Tottenham are ready to come back to their new stadium in 2018/19 and have wasted no time in securing an important commercial deal that will bring in important revenue.
William Hill have been involved with Spurs as the club’s official betting partner since the start of the 2016/17 season and after two successful years working in tandem, the contract has been extended.
The exact terms have not been released but we do know that it is a multi-year deal and will therefore involve significant funding while the operator continues to support one of the biggest football clubs in the country.
As the deal was announced, Fran Jones – Head of Partnerships at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club stated:
This new agreement reinforces William Hill’s commitment to the Club and the borough of Haringey and we look forward to continuing our partnership as we approach our move back to Tottenham and our new stadium.
In reply to Spurs, William Hill’s Chief Digital Officer Ulrik Bengtsson added:
We are delighted to extend our partnership with Tottenham Hotspur. We have built strong ties with the club, staff and the fans over the past two seasons and we are excited to grow our relationship as the Club enters a significant chapter in their history with the move into their new stadium.
As part of their overall agreement with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, William Hill have also been backing the local community since the start of the contract in 2016/17. Projects have involved the club’s charity – the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation – and among the benefits provided was a six figure grant to the Elevator Programme, which is set up to help young people find work in and around the Haringey area.
That work is set to continue under the extension to this betting partnership and at a time when news reports surrounding gambling sponsorship in sport continue to be mixed, this is another good news story which is welcomed on all sides.
Spurs stepped into the unknown when travelling to Wembley Stadium last season. It wasn’t a ground that had been kind to them in the past so the club would have been relieved to have broken the ‘Wembley Hoodoo’ and to have achieved their minimum aim of Champions League qualification.
Now the club faces an important summer where new signings will be discussed and contracts extended for their most vital players. Tottenham have already been busy in that respect with both Kyle Walker-Peters and Davinson Sanchez having put pen to paper on contract extensions and we can expect more announcements either side of this summer’s World Cup.
The club already has a very strong squad under Mauricio Pochettino so there is unlikely to be a lot of new personnel coming through but the manager might just want one or two big-money buys in order to strengthen his new roster.
Even for a club such as Spurs, extra finance is vital in order to maintain that squad so the William Hill deal is a timely one. In return, the company will get the kind of vast exposure that anyone would receive by partnering in with one of the biggest Premier League sides so it’s a well-balanced arrangement and one that is set to develop in the seasons that follow.
