Spurs v Borussia Dortmund: Hosts aim to break Wembley Hoodoo
Table of Contents
Spurs may have home advantage in this tie but after a disappointing Champions League campaign in 2016/17, few punters are giving Mauricio Pochettino’s men any chance of getting an early victory. Tottenham were handed a tough group which also contains Real Madrid and Apoel Nicosia and will therefore be anxious to get at least a point from this tie.
There is the continued issue of playing home fixtures at Wembley Stadium – Spurs have yet to register a win there this season – so how are the bookies viewing Wednesday’s game?
Match Odds
Despite the gloom amongst many Spurs supporters ahead of this game, the home side are actually favourites to win here and can be backed at a best price of 7/5 with bet365. Victory for Dortmund is quoted at best odds of 28/13 with 32Red and 888Sport while the draw is on offer at 133/50 with MarathonBet.
Overall it’s been a positive start to the new domestic campaign with Spurs completely dominating Everton at the weekend. That 3-0 victory was their second straight win on the road but in contrast they have taken just one point from two matches at home.
The question of playing at Wembley Stadium could cloud judgement here so before we call the result, let’s take a look at some of the players who might decide Wednesday’s fixture.
Individual Goal Scorers
August is behind us and that means Harry Kane is free to start scoring again. After finding the target for England, the striker scored a brace in that win over Everton and he starts as favourite to open the scoring against Dortmund at 7/2 with Paddy Power and 32Red.
The danger from the Germans may well be posed by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who is also at 7/2 in some places while marginally further back at best odds of 21/5 with 888Sport and 32Red. Aubameyang has been a transfer target for a number of European sides and has started the season in great form with six goals in five matches across all competitions.
Other options here include Spurs’ new signing Fernando Llorente at a top price of 11/2 with bet365 while Christian Eriksen was also on target at the weekend and could be a good outside option at best odds of 19/2 with 32Red for the first goal.
For Borussia Dortmund, we could also consider Andriy Yarmolenko at 17/2 with bet365 and former Chelsea man Andre Schurrle at 8/1. Both will provide threats but Aubameyang is in such supreme form that we’re tipping the Gabon international to open the scoring.
Other Side Bets
Tottenham have scored in each of their four league games so far and have conceded in both of their home matches at the start of 2017/18. Taking that into account and given the firepower in this Dortmund side, a top price of 8/13 from Sun Bets on Both Teams to Score could be a worthy third tip.
Other options that we are considering are Aubameyang to score at least twice at a top price of 5/1 with Paddy Power and Betway and a winning margin of Dortmund by one goal at a best of 4/1 with Paddy Power again.
As you may have guessed by now we are favouring the German side in this game but it has nothing to do with Spurs and their struggles on this Wembley surface. Comparatively, the two teams do look evenly matched but the market should probably be closer and there is definite value in backing Dortmund.
Aubameyang is in great form and his side sit on top of the Bundesliga albeit thanks in part to Bayern Munich’s unexpectedly slow start. As for Spurs, they will be without Dele Alli who starts a European ban and he is a key figure for this side. Unfortunately, when you take all the factors into account, a narrow Dortmund victory could be on the cards with a correct score of 2-1 in favour of the German side a possible addition to these tips at its best of 10/1 with bet365.
