The 76th Golden Globes Awards 2019 Odds Preview
Table of Contents
The New Year begins with one of the most prestigious awards nights for the film and TV industry. The 76th Golden Globes will be held on January 6th at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California with the great and the good vying for recognition.
The evening is designed to reward the best in the industries, both in the US and overseas and there are lots of categories to work through on a long night. There’s also an active set of betting markets to get involved with so let’s see if we can pick some winners for the 76th running of the Golden Globes.
Best Pictures
In this ceremony, there are best picture awards for different genres so we’ll start off the preview with the drama category. This could be one to avoid however as we have a very hot favourite with A Star is Born currently listed at best odds of just 1/4 with William Hill and 188Bet.
The movie is the latest in a long line of remakes on a classic theme and is notable for a brilliant performance by Lady Gaga in the starring role. Behind the clear market leader, there are a number of options starting with second favourite If Beale Street Could Talk at a top price of 11/2 with Royal Panda. Other nominees here include BlacKkKlansman at a best of 11/1 with 10Bet and SportPesa, Black Panther at a top price of 14/1 with 888Sport and Bohemian Rhapsody at best odds of 20/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral.
All are strong films in their own right and they might stand a chance in any other year but there looks to be only one winner in this category.
We’ll therefore move on to Best Picture – Musical / Comedy – where things are much closer. Once again we have a clear favourite with Green Book available at best odds of 6/4 with Coral and Ladbrokes while the same two bookmakers have The Favourite, close behind at a top industry price of 9/4.
Green Book is based on a true story of a journey into America’s deep south and the cast of relative unknowns is headed by Viggo Mortensen. The Favourite is an interesting alternative and is a collaboration between operations in the US, Ireland and the UK. It debuted in 2018 at the Venice International Film Festival where it won two awards and we think it’s also one to watch in the Golden Globes market.
Completing the betting in this section are the other nominees – Vice at 27/11 with 10Bet and SportPesa, Mary Poppins Returns at 14/1 with 188Bet and Royal Panda and Crazy Rich Asians at best odds of 25/1 with Royal Panda and 888Sport.
Individual Categories
The Golden Globes still separates individual awards into male and female categories so we’re looking to bet on best actor and best actress and we’ll start with the Drama section where, once again, A Star is Born dominates.
For Best Actor, Bradley Cooper is the man to watch as he heads the market by some margin at best odds of 2/5 with 10Bet and 188Bet. Rami Malek follows at 5/2 with the same two bookmakers and then we drift to third favourite Willem Dafoe at 11/1 with 188Bet.
Moving sideways to the Best Actress in the drama section and we find Lady Gaga at 11/21 with 188Bet. The versatile performer has received some impressive reviews for her role in A Star is Born and is a worthy favourite here.
The other betting options for this market are Glenn Close at 12/5 with 10Bet and SportPesa, Nicole Kidman at 10/1 with 188Bet, Melissa McCarthy at 10/1 with 10Bet and SportPesa and Rosamund Pike at 12/1 with 188Bet.
We’ll round things off with Best Director and this is another area where we think the favourite could be upset. The market leader for this category is Alfonso Cuaron for Roma and he is available at 2/9 with most bookies including 10Bet and 188Bet. The second favourite will get some support and that’s because it involves the Director of A Star is Born. Bradley Cooper can be picked up at a top price of 11/4 with 10Bet and SportPesa.
The names completing the Best Director category include Adam McKay at 10/1 with 188Bet, Spike Lee at 14/1 with 10Bet and SportPesa, plus Peter Farrelly at 16/1 with 188Bet.
Verdict
In this round up we have covered the main categories of interest but there are some additional markets for minor awards where the bookies have been slower to declare. There are many more categories up for grabs on awards night itself and, while not all of them will have betting options attached, there could be some additional markets opening as the ceremony approaches. Feel free to keep checking those but with less than a month to go, there are some interesting odds to be found here.
We do think that A Star is Born has much of the Drama sections sewn up here so it’s a case of either taking a modest profit at some very short prices or you can look for other categories to find some extra value. The remake, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper has little competition with First Man not featuring in these awards so we, ourselves, will look at the alternatives.
The first price that interests us is the 9/4 from Ladbrokes on The Favourite to win Best Picture in the Comedy / Musical category. Green Book may lead the betting here but it looks to be of niche interest and our tip is more in the mainstream.
To finish, we’ll keep to the theory that A Star is Born will sweep the night and take Bradley Cooper at 11/4 in the Best Director section. The remake could run away with the voting and on a night where the shorter priced options tend to dominate, those odds could be a rare example of value.
Best Bets for Golden Globes 2019:
- The Favourite to win Best Film (Comedy / Musical) at 9/4 with Ladbrokes
- Bradley Cooper to win Best Director at 11/4 with 10Bet
